Pfizer Blocks Sale of Cheap Drugs - Part 1
25th July 2004
A concerned Pharmacy Shark Patrol (PSP) subscriber picked up a recent
article from MSNBC website. Pfizer filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court
in Delaware halting a web site from selling a cheaper generic brand.
This bulletin is part 1 of a series aimed at highlighting the issues
associated with big pharma taking over. Part 2 will be aimed at the solutions
(and there are plenty).
Many people believe over priced big pharma brands are not affordable.
In countries like Canada and Australia pharmaceuticals are available at
between half to one third of the price of the identical product sold in
USA.
The generic brands are important, making it possible for fixed or low
income people to afford better life style medication. Generic brands also
keep big pharma price hikes down.
Additionally, if big pharma gets a monopoly they will squeeze the distribution
channels out of existence. If there is only one brand you get no choices,
you are told the price and you take what you are given. You certainly
do not need wholesalers, sales or marketing people to give you choices.
Big pharma want to double the price and hope their sales volumes only
drop slightly, so their profit will significantly increase. Without competition
you can get away with less work, fewer deliveries and show a disgustingly
high profit. When choices and competition is limited the consumer will
pay more.
Political funding by big pharma in an election year can not be overlooked.
However, the USA has a well educated older population facing outrageously
high medication costs. No amount of funding can save a Politian who thinks
(s)he can ignore grey power.
Last year Pfizer took the path of using trade mark arguments to prevent
Google and Overture from accepting advertisers of competitive lines. Pfizer
made it harder for generics to compete, but did not stop generics. People
simply learned the generic names and then continued to order drugs like
Lipitor under the relevant pharmaceutical name Lipitor = Atorvastatin.

for a full range of brand and generic ED, Weight and Hair medication equivalents
such as Viagra = sildenafil citrate and Levitra = vardenafil and Cialis
= tadalafil and Propecia = finasteride etc.
In countries like Canada and Australia, chemists and Doctors are able
to prescribe the medications that offer the best value to their patients.
In many countries the generic products keep the prices of big pharma brands
down, to less than half the price paid for the same product by USA consumers.
Part 2, out next week will deal with the many solutions to over priced
medications.
