Healthier Hair for a more complete happier Lifestyle

Research has found the following effective options for healthy hair growth are considered as safe medical treatments with no undesirable side effects. (Apart from no detrimental health side effects, the treatment will enhance hair growth on your head not on your body). Once-a-day pill, Propecia® (Finasteride 1mg) for men, or twice-a-day Rogaine® (Minoxidil 2% or 5%) spray, are the best options that can be used alone, or in conjunction with surgery.

Clinical Testing

Propecia® (Finasteride 1mg), manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc. is available by prescription. It was introduced into the market with huge fanfare and excitement in December of 1997 as the first oral treatment for male pattern hair loss, proven in clinical trials. For now, Propecia® is for men only and is not indicated for women.

Many years of rigorous scientific studies and research were undertaken to find a safe way to re-grow natural hair in 2 out of 3 men. In addition, it was discovered the treatment would actually stop hair loss in 5 out of 6 men. In medical and technical terms, Propecia® works by decreasing the formation of DHT from testosterone by blocking a certain enzyme in the body. By decreasing the amount of DHT, affected follicles that produced thin wispy hair, tend to 'bounce back' producing a thicker caliber, more pigmented, longer hair. It tends to be this effect that eventually gives men that are thinning in the crown, visible coverage. Noticable differences will occur firstly, with the lower level of hair loss in the first few months preceding more re-growth of healthier hair. It should be noted that it could take 6-12 months before full results are noticed with the Propecia® treatment.

Are there negative side effects with Propecia ® treatments?

Most men are concerned about Propecia® (Finasteride 1 mg) effecting their sexual performance. Once your beautiful new youthful hair has grown and you have successfully attracted gorgious women, will you be able to perform at your peak? Or, more to the point - Other than feeling better and happier about your personal appearance with a full healthier head of hair, will you perform better in bed?

The important factor here is that Propecia® lowers levels of DHT, the hormone primarily responsible for male pattern hair loss, without decreasing levels of testosterone - the male hormone responsible for masculinity. Therefore even just mild male sexual side effects (described as difficulty maintaining erection or decreased sexual drive in the clinical trials) are rare, occurring in less than 2% of all patients.

It can confidently be claimed that, any uncommon side effects that do occur have been shown to be temporary and disappear completely when the medication is discontinued. It should also be noted that the side effects usually go away even when the patient continues the medication.

The medication in Propecia® called Finasteride, has actually been available for over ten years to effectively treat men with enlarged prostates, and has demonstrated an excellent safety profile over that time. It is important to remember that Propecia® must be taken daily in order to sustain results. If the medication is discontinued, any hair previously gained is lost over the following 12 - month period. Propecia® tends to work best in the crown of patients experiencing early to moderate hair loss and is effective in slowing and / or reversing male pattern hair loss in many men.

The bottom line is that if you are experiencing male pattern hair loss, Propecia® may be beneficial.

What is Avodart?

Avodart is a new medicine made by GlaxoSmithKline which contains the active ingredient Dutasteride. Avodart was originally developed for treating prostate enlargement, a condition known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It has passed stage II of FDA testing for the treatment of hair loss in men, however is currently approved as a prostate treatment medication only. Avodart is for MEN ONLY!

How does Avodart (Dutasteride) works ?

Avodart inhibits a hormone known as DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is a hormone that appears to cause hair loss (also known as MPB - Male Pattern Baldness) in most men. DHT is also the main cause of prostate enlargement in many men (also known as BPH - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). Avodart works by inhibiting the activities of two types of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes. These enzymes are responsible in the body for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Avodart will lower DHT levels substantially.

What is the difference between Avodart (Dutasteride) from Propecia (Finasteride) ?

Both medications work in a similar way, lowering DHT levels. However, Avodart inhibits the action of two types of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes (type I and type II). Propecia (Finasteride) only inhibits one type of the enzyme (type II). Avodart is more potent, Avodart has been shown to decrease levels of DHT by about 30% more than Proepcia (Finasteride).

Clinical Testing
Avodart (dutasteride 0.5mg) for hair loss

Phase III trials have already begun, however if the drug is to get the approval of the FDA for the treatment of hair loss, this is anticipated by 2006.

Currently Avodart is approved by the FDA for the treatment of enlarged prostate (BPH) condition only. Similar to this was the case for Proscar (Finasteride), the drug intended for enlarged prostate treatment. Proscar (Finasteride) was later approved for the treatment of hair loss as well, under the name Propecia.
